What website pages does your business need?

Your website is a stepping stone for customers to learn about you and stay loyal to your business. That’s why every business needs a website with purposeful web pages that encourage customers to follow different aspects of what your company offers.

By far, the most popular web pages are ones that are pretty straightforward:

  • Home
  • About
  • Service/Products
  • Contact

Many businesses have a designated “Blog” page as well, but we wouldn’t say this is a mandatory page for everyone. You want to think about the core information you need to present to current and potential customers. The four pages we mentioned above create a solid foundation for your website as a whole.

The four main website pages

Home Page

This is where you make your first impression—it’s going to be the first thing your visitors will see when they land on your website. 

This page needs to provide an overview of what your company does and give visitors a clear idea of the products or services you offer. You’ll want to make it easy for people to contact you and should include a call-to-action (CTA) on this page that encourages people to take some kind of action—contact you via email, join your mailing list, etc.

If necessary, you can also provide information about your location(s) or hours of operation on the home page. Make sure you’re using simple language that conveys your message without getting too wordy! Otherwise, you may run the risk of losing the visitor’s interest.

About Page

Think about it as an opportunity to tell a meaningful story about the founding of your business and the people who currently work there.

This page doesn’t need to have super lengthy content, but you do want to achieve an authentic tone of voice and overall feel. Talk about how and why the business started, and aim to paint a picture of what inspired you to get into this industry in the first place. Ask yourself, “What did I want to do differently to better serve people?” 

You can also include photographs on this page to provide a more personal touch. Give your website’s visitors a face to the name!

Finally, this is also the place to make clear what your company’s values are and how you honor them. Maybe you donate food waste from catered events to local soup kitchens, or maybe you believe in only using locally sourced ingredients. This is an important part of showing that your business isn’t just focused on profits. Instead, you get the chance to show that your business is part of the community and truly cares about its customers.

Services/Products Page

It’s exactly what it sounds like! This is where you list the services you provide and describe how they work. You should also include any additional information that might be helpful to potential clients and users.

If you’re selling a product online through your website—like T-shirts or greeting cards, for example— make sure that it’s easy for shoppers to find out how much each item costs. You’ll need to include information about what they’ll pay in taxes and shipping too.

If your business offers services, you want to provide the same level of context and detail that you would for a tangible object. You can use images and text to tell a story about how each service can enhance the customer’s life, but watch out for heavy-handed language. You want to convince the web page visitor to become a frequent customer without sounding false. 

Contact Page

This is essential for all business websites. You want to provide visitors with the ability to get in touch with you directly. If you’re a retail store or otherwise operate on specific hours, you’ll want to include this information so customers can contact you during your available hours.

On your contact page, there are a few basic items you should include for people to get in touch with you/your business:

  • A contact form
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Your physical address (if you have one)

Spend some time thinking about which web pages will most benefit your website, and develop the content that will live on each page. The goal is to present your business in an authentic and efficient manner so that your customers feel connected to you, your team, and your products or services.

Remember to have some fun with it! If you don’t love something, you can always go back and edit it.
